On average customers now buy 10 bags a year compared to 140 bags in 2014.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Plastic bag sales this year by supermarket:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Morrisons &#8211; down 64%<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tesco &#8211; down 64%<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Asda &#8211; down 45%<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Marks and Spencer &#8211; down 40%<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0Co-op &#8211; down 21%<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Waitrose &#8211; down 20%<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0Sainsbury&#8217;s &#8211; down 1%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Across the world, more than 300 million tonnes of plastic is produced a year and around eight million of this plastic will enter the ocean. Each year 100,000 animals in the sea are killed by plastic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Welcoming today\u2019s figures, Environment Secretary Theresa Villiers said:<\/strong> &#8220;Our comprehensive action to slash plastic waste and leave our environment in a better state continues to deliver results, with our 5p charge reducing plastic bag sales by 90% in the big supermarkets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;No one wants to see the devastating impact plastic waste is having on our precious wildlife.
