Mobile users are now able to switch networks by sending a single text and take their old number with them within 24 hours under new regulator rules. <\/span><\/p>\n

Customer had to phone their mobile provider when they want to switch to a new mobile firm. They were given a porting authorisation code (PAC) to give to a new provider if they wanted to keep the same phone number.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The new way to switch networks comes after customer complaints about it being difficult to switch providers. Ofcom have said the new text-to-switch process will make it easier and quicker for customers to leave their mobile company.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ofcom’s consumer group director Lindsey Fussell said: “Breaking up with your mobile provider has never been easier thanks to Ofcom’s new rules.<\/span><\/p>\n

“You won’t need to have that awkward chat with your current provider to take advantage of the great deals available.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The process:<\/span><\/div>\n
\n

  1. Customers who want to switch and keep their existing phone number text “PAC” to 65075 to begin the process<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Their existing provider will respond by text within a minute<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. They will then be sent their switching code (PAC), which will be valid for 30 days<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. The provider’s reply must also include important information about any early termination charges or pay-as-you-go credit balances<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. The customer then gives the code to their new provider, and this company must arrange for the switch to complete within one working day<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. While most people want to keep their mobile number when they switch, about one in six do not. These customers can text “STAC” to 75075 to request a “service termination authorisation code”.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Ofcom have now banned mobile providers from charging for notice periods running after the switch date. Ofcom has estimated that it will result in a saving of \u00a310 million a year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
