This was a total power failure and not just semi isolated incidents and could have come at a worse time given that people in Argentina were preparing to go to the polls for local elections. The only blessing was that it was on a Sunday which is traditionally a quieter day. Had it been during the working week there would have been chaos.<\/p>\n<p>Although Argentina &amp; Uruguay were the worst affected, parts of Paraguay and Chile were also hit.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What Caused The Blackout?<\/h2>\n<p>According to Edesur the electricity supply company responsible, it was a <span lang=\"en\" tabindex=\"0\">massive failure that occurred in the interconnection system.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"es\">\ud83d\udce3 Para garantizar la reposici\u00f3n total del servicio seguimos trabajando en la soluci\u00f3n de casos puntuales que se desprenden de la falla masiva ocurrida en el sistema de interconexi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Edesur Argentina (@OficialEdesur) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OficialEdesur\/status\/1140412885325275136?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 17, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Other sources seem to indicate that it also involved a transmission failing at the Yacycret\u00e1 hydroelectric dam.
