{"id":12929,"date":"2019-05-14T09:37:49","date_gmt":"2019-05-14T09:37:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fiveminutesspare.com\/news\/?p=12929"},"modified":"2019-05-14T10:19:37","modified_gmt":"2019-05-14T10:19:37","slug":"uk-drivers-who-sit-with-engines-idling-could-face-fines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fiveminutesspare.com\/news\/uk-drivers-who-sit-with-engines-idling-could-face-fines\/","title":{"rendered":"UK drivers who sit with engines idling could face fines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Drivers who leave their engines running whilst parked could receive instant fines under new proposals which are being considered by the government to give local authorities more power to reduce pollution.<\/p>\n<p>The environmental secretary Michael Gove said that instant fines for repeat offenders should be considered but warned that any new powers should be used proportionately by councils.<\/p>\n<p>The fines could range from \u00a320 to \u00a380 under existing regulations. Once they know the damage it causes, including the health risks, and they\u2019re asked to switch off the engine, they do so and think twice before idling again. Fines should be a last resort \u2013 we prefer to ask nicely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Westminster council, an idling car produces enough exhaust emissions to fill 150 balloons a minute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Department for Transport spokesperson said:<\/strong> \u201cWe are determined to reduce the damaging environmental impacts of drivers who keep their engines running while stationary, especially those in school zones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is why we are making guidance for local authorities clearer, so that they know how and when to target drivers falling foul of the law.
