An air and sea search for a British and French tourist has been scaled back.<\/p>\n

Passersby found the belongings of Hugo Palmer and Erwan Ferrieux on a beach north of Sydney on Monday. Police searched the beach and discovered the pair\u2019s rental car nearby. Other personal items including travel documents were found in the vehicle.<\/p>\n

Police began a ground and water search on Monday but found no signs of both 20-year-olds. The two men knew each other from attending school together and had been travelling along the New South Wales coast.<\/p>\n

It is believed both men had went for a swim on and had arrived in Port Macquarie on Sunday 7th February. Glasses, keys and wallets were found on the beach.<\/p>\n

The search for the two men will be continued.<\/p>\n

A New South Wales Police spokesman said: “Based on advice from experts, police have scaled back the air and sea search, but sweeps of the coastline and foreshore will continue over the coming days.”<\/p>\n

Insp Peter Neville said: “This whole operation is about locating and rescuing these young men. From some of the discussions I’ve had this morning we honestly believe these people could well be alive,”<\/p>\n

“At the moment this is strictly a rescue mission.”<\/p>\n
