A Manchester United fan bravely put a huge bet on Liverpool to win the league – and won 91k from it.

Despite not winning the league for around 30 years, Bradford resident Tony Ward, 53, plucked up the courage to put \u00a355,000 down on a bet at the start of the season, betting on Liverpool to win the league. The odds were 4\/6, meaning every \u00a34 he staked, he\u2019d get \u00a36 back.<\/p>\n

The money was partly from an inheritance left to him by his mother, after she sadly passed away in 2017.<\/p>\n

Discussing his huge win, he said: <\/span>“I fancy a big holiday at some point. The rest is for a rainy day.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Liverpool were always looking like they could win the title. I picked them after a long, long debate.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“It was a two-horse race between them and Manchester City, as far as I was concerned.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“I’m an armchair supporter, really – I’ve actually been fan of Manchester United since I was a kid!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“[Mum] wouldn’t have minded what I did with the money – not at all. She liked a flutter! She liked the horses.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“But I’d give it all back to still have her around. I cherished her.”<\/p>\n

The season was nearly cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and Tony\u2019s bet nearly void. He likely would have got his original stake back, but Liverpool were so many points clear it would have been a joke not to have given him his winnings. But, bookies being bookies, they wouldn\u2019t have paid up the \u00a391,666,66.<\/p>\n

Tony added:<\/p>\n

“I would have got my stake back, I think, if the season had been cancelled. But that would have been unfair.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Liverpool were that far clear. They only needed six points.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“They had to play Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in the two games after [the bet was placed].<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“I thought that if they could get through <\/span>them<\/span> I was going to win.” <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Despite his most recent bet paying off, Tony says he’s going to stay away from betting shops for a while. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“I certainly haven’t got any plans to put another bet on for that money again,” he said. “I won’t dive in.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“I don’t bet just \u00a35 or \u00a310. I won’t just do it willy-nilly!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“I’ve always liked a flutter – especially when I was younger – but I’ve tried to be good over the last few years.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“I only bet when I really feel it. I pretty much knew when I stuck the bet on that Liverpool were going to do it.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
