{"id":2584,"date":"2023-02-14T11:12:05","date_gmt":"2023-02-14T11:12:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fiveminutesspare.com\/food\/?p=2584"},"modified":"2023-02-14T11:12:05","modified_gmt":"2023-02-14T11:12:05","slug":"how-to-cook-a-steak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fiveminutesspare.com\/food\/how-to-cook-a-steak\/how-to\/","title":{"rendered":"How to cook a steak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is made possible by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/\">BBC<\/a> Foods!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"recipe-ingredients__heading gel-double-pica\">Ingredients<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"recipe-ingredients__sub-heading gel-great-primer-bold\">For the steak<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"recipe-ingredients__list\">\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">2 rib-eye\u00a0steaks, well-marbled (the size and thickness can vary according to taste)<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">splash groundnut oil, or similar flavourless oil<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">100ml\/3\u00bdfl oz\u00a0red wine, for deglazing<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">sprig fresh\u00a0thyme, leaves picked (optional)<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">large knob of\u00a0butter<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">salt and freshly ground\u00a0black pepper<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">chips, to serve (optional)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"recipe-method__heading gel-double-pica\">Method<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"recipe-method__list\">\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">About 45 minutes before you want to serve the steaks, unwrap from the packaging and place on a plate.<\/p>\n<ol class=\"recipe-method__list\">\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Season both sides of the steaks with salt.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Allow to come up to room temperature for up to an hour.<\/p>\n<ol class=\"recipe-method__list\">\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Alternatively, you can salt the steaks in the morning and leave them uncovered in the fridge all day.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">If you skip the advance salting, do still season the steaks immediately before cooking.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Heat the oil in a heavy-based frying pan, over a high heat until it is hot but not quite smoking.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">When the pan is hot, add the steaks and fry for 1 minute on each side, then turn regularly until the crust is dark golden-brown on both sides and the inside is cooked to your liking.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">As a rough guide, a 2cm thick steak will take 3 minutes in total for rare, 5 minutes in total for medium and 8 minutes for well done.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">When the steak is cooked to your liking, remove it from the pan onto a warm plate and allow it to rest for 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Do not skip the resting, as this will allow the steak to relax and it will be more tender and juicy when served.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Add the wine to the hot pan, and scrape all the sticky bits from the pan up into the wine to create a bit of a sauce.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Add in any resting juices from the plate as well. Finish the sauce with the thyme leaves and a bit of butter.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Season with salt and black pepper, to taste.
