class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">800g\/1lb 12oz\u00a0potatoes, unpeeled and cut into roughly 3cm\/1\u00bcin chunks<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">4 medium\u00a0carrots, peeled and cut in half lengthways<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">2 medium\u00a0parsnips, peeled and cut in half lengthways<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">1 small whole\u00a0chicken\u00a0(around 1.3kg\/2lb 14oz)<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">250g\/9oz frozen\u00a0peas<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">salt and ground\u00a0black pepper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"recipe-ingredients__sub-heading gel-great-primer-bold\">For the gravy<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"recipe-ingredients__list\">\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">2 tbsp\u00a0vegetable oil<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">2 tbsp\u00a0plain flour<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">350ml\/12fl oz hot\u00a0chicken stock, made with 1\u00a0chicken stock\u00a0cube<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">\u00bd tsp\u00a0soy sauce\u00a0(preferably dark)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"recipe-method__heading gel-double-pica\">Method<\/h2>\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Before starting this dish, preheat the oven to 210C\/190C Fan\/Gas 6\u00bd.<\/p>\n<ol class=\"recipe-method__list\">\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Put the potatoes, carrots and parsnips in a large bowl and toss with the oil, a little salt and lots of ground black pepper.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Scatter the vegetables over a large roasting tin or baking tray.<\/p>\n<ol class=\"recipe-method__list\">\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Make a gap in the middle for the chicken, and place breast-side up.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Snip off the butcher&#8217;s string from the chicken and season with salt and ground black pepper.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Roast the chicken and vegetables for 30 minutes, remove from the oven and turn the vegetables.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Return to the oven for a further 40 minutes or until the chicken is thoroughly cooked and the juices run clear when the thickest part of the breast and thigh are pierced with a skewer or tip of a knife.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Once the chicken is cooked, transfer to a board, cover with foil and a couple of tea towels to keep warm and rest for 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<ol class=\"recipe-method__list\">\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Transfer the vegetables to a large serving dish and keep warm.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">To make the gravy, pour the oil into a small saucepan and stir in the flour with a wooden spoon.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Place over medium heat and slowly add the chicken stock, just a little at a time, stirring constantly.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Add the soy sauce for a little extra colour and simmer gently for 3 mins, stirring occasionally.<\/p>\n<ol class=\"recipe-method__list\">\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Season to taste with salt and pepper.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Cook the peas according to the packet instructions in the microwave or on the hob and drain.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Carve the chicken and serve with the roasted vegetables, peas and
