{"id":2365,"date":"2022-11-23T13:07:13","date_gmt":"2022-11-23T13:07:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fiveminutesspare.com\/food\/?p=2365"},"modified":"2022-11-23T13:07:13","modified_gmt":"2022-11-23T13:07:13","slug":"easy-chana-dal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fiveminutesspare.com\/food\/easy-chana-dal\/low-budget-healthy-foods\/","title":{"rendered":"Easy chana dal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is made possible by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/\">BBC<\/a> Foods!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"recipe-ingredients__heading gel-double-pica\">Ingredients<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"recipe-ingredients__sub-heading gel-great-primer-bold\">For the dal<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"recipe-ingredients__list\">\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">250g\/9oz\u00a0chana dal<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">1 tsp\u00a0salt<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">1 tsp\u00a0turmeric<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">2 tsp ghee or\u00a0butter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"recipe-ingredients__sub-heading gel-great-primer-bold\">For the tarka<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"recipe-ingredients__list\">\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">2 tbsp\u00a0sunflower oil<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">1 tsp\u00a0cumin\u00a0seeds<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">4 large\u00a0garlic\u00a0cloves, finely chopped<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">20g\/\u00beoz fresh root\u00a0ginger, peeled and finely chopped<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">1 small\u00a0onion, finely chopped<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">1\u00a0tomato, finely chopped<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">2\u20133 green\u00a0chillies\u00a0(bird\u2019s eyes or similar), chopped<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">2 tsp dried methi (fenugreek)<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-ingredients__list-item\">2 tsp\u00a0garam masala<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"recipe-method__heading gel-double-pica\">Method<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"recipe-method__list\">\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">To make the dal, soak the chana dal for at least 1 hour in cold water.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Once soaked, drain through a sieve and rinse under cold running water.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Place the dal in a large saucepan with the salt, turmeric and ghee and cover with 1 litre water.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Bring to the boil and cook over a medium heat for 45 minutes, or until soft.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Skim off any scum that forms on top of the water \u2013 this is just starch from the dal.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Meanwhile, to make the tadka, heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and when they start to pop, add the garlic and ginger and cook for 1 minute.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Immediately add the onion and cook for 5 minutes.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Add the tomato and green chillies, season with salt, to taste, and cook for a further 2 minutes.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Add the methi and garam masala to the paste, remove from the heat and set aside.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Check the dal is cooked \u2013 if it is a little dry, stir in up to 200ml\/7fl oz freshly boiled water to loosen.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"recipe-method__list-item\">\n<p class=\"recipe-method__list-item-text\">Stir in the tadka and cook for a few more minutes.
