@amglicklax it was that bastards smiley’s plan !!
one of the saddest stories ever told.
a stunning film made from a very great novel
@mulbrogue Thanks I’ll check it out. I was at Checkpoint Charlie in 80 and 88-90 and it really looks the way it did in 1980 down to the last detail. Great set design.
Most movies are spoiled if you know the end, but this film is only enriched on 2nd, 3rd viewing.
The reason is partly the amazing cast: Burton, Bloom, Werner, Cusack, Hordern etc. And what a stroke of genius to cast the urbane George Voskovec as the East German Defense Attorney. J B Priestly said of the book: “Superbly constructed, with an atmosphere of chilly hell.” And you could say that of the film too.
The Cold War was only about betrayal, & this was the best movie about the Cold War” “Whudda you think spies are!”
Burton is at his best in this film – he achingly portrays the toll that years of spying have taken on Leamus, and he mutes that famous voice to suit.
The introductory music is truly beautiful
@screenwriter
The “Checkpoint Charlie” was Smithfield market in Dublin Check it out.
This movie so perfectly establishes the Cold War Germany milieu. The Pinewood Studios Checkpoint Charlie set is right on to every last detail. Well done and for the younger crowd, the way things used to be. Cheers.
