Mark Of The Witch Cult AKA “Another” – Giallo – Esque Horror

If you are a fan of Giallo and in particular the work of Jess Franco and Dario Argento then you will enjoy this. If not then you probably won’t get much out of this 79-minute artful low-budget phantasmagoria, written and directed by Jason Bognacki.

Anyone familiar with Bognacki’s work will know that he has little interest in conventional storytelling methods. Instead, he uses bizarre yet beautiful scenes and images to tell a tale that does have a plot of sorts but certainly doesn’t adhere to the traditional Hollywood three-act narrative.

The focus throughout is on mood with ominous-sounding music sound design and imagery that is sometimes foreboding and occasionally hyper-violent.  If you are still reading then we assume you like the sound of it so here is a largely spoiler-free overview of what to expect.

Overview

Originally titled “Another”, the film stars then-relative newcomer Pauline Rojas as Jordyn a wide-eyed orphan who wants nothing more than to find out who her parents were.  On her 18th birthday events are set in motion which will eventually answer that burning question. This starts with a bizarre suicide and continues with the arrival of a mysterious woman, thought dead. Is she her mother or has a witch come to claim her soul?

Soon Jordyn starts to suffer memory loss often ending up in strange places with no idea how she got there. Her grip on reality soon begins to fade so she seeks help before her life is completely overtaken by what she now realises is an actual witch.

What follows is a concoction of visions intertwined with scenes where the dialogue slowly reveals more secrets. We say slowly as often the scenes don’t seem to offer much in the way of plot advancement, however, they are usually beautifully filmed.

Thoughts

This is a real marmite movie, Giallo and art house horror fans will really enjoy this, however, others will regard it as boring and confusing. It would be fair to say there is no linear structure to the narrative and some of the CGI effects are a bit dodgy. However, if you view it with an open mind and disregard some so-so acting you will get something out of it. Speaking of acting Pauline Rojas looks great but is a bit wooden, however, Maria Olson makes up for this with a genuinely scary performance.
