Mayall, along with Adrian Edmondson, Nigel Planer, Christopher Ryan, and Alexei Sayle, were the co-stars of the show. The whacky, surreal comedy was first televised in 1982 on BBC2 and ran for six episodes. A second series of the ‘alternative’ comedy show (also 6 episodes) was aired two years later in 1984.

The offbeat comedy followed the lives of four loathsome students who live together while attending Scumbag College. The plots focus on the interaction between the four hapless half-wit students and their seriously deranged landlord, Jerzei Balowski (Sayle). The surreal rambunctious slapstick humour ensured that the idiosyncratic sitcom became a big hit with viewers. Each episode also featured a renowned special guest and a musical performance by a notable act of the day.

Here are five hilarious clips from the UK’s whackiest show ever:

Episode 5, Series 1: Interesting (7 Dec 1982)

Episode 6, Series 2: Summer Holiday (19 June 1984)

Episode 2, Series 1: Oil (16 Nov 1982)

Episode 2, Series 1: Oil (16 Nov 1982)

Episode 2, Series 2: Cash (15 May 1984)

Enjoy!

Header image credit: CC BY-NC-ND 2.0/Flickr

The Young Ones The Young Ones is a British sitcom written by Rik Mayall, Ben Elton, and Lise Mayer.
